Graduation—whether from kindergarten, high school, college, or any other program—is an event to be commemorated and celebrated. No matter if your grad was home-schooled, public-schooled, or private-schooled, he or she will likely enjoy celebrating his or her special commencement with friends and family. Getting presents, of course, is always fun, too. Here are a few items you might want to gift your grad with this year.
A Journal: If there’s one thing I wish I’d kept during my early post-secondary years, it’s a journal. If you think that won’t go over well, a camera and scrapbook would always be nice, too.
A Free Room and Board Pass: Make up a few cool, homemade ticket stubs and gift them to your grad for free room and board whenever he or she is passing through your area. This will come in handy for those times he or she is traveling, on his or her way home from school, or facing a tough time finding a place to stay in between semesters or purchasing or renting a home.
Money: This universal gift is always appreciated, no matter what road your grad will travel down!
A Book: But not just any book! While Dr. Seuss’s Oh, The Places You Will Go is always a classic favorite, try a title that will give your graduate some support and some options. It’s Your Life is a great book about options after high school; so is The Teenage Liberation Handbook.
Unconditional Support: This gift is always appreciated—especially if your grad is not going down a conventional path and is instead doing something that makes people in the family angry—such as forgoing college to intern for an environmental company, or traveling the world rather than “getting a real job.”
Life Supplies: If your grad is going “out into the world” on his or her own, he or she will likely need plenty of “life supplies,” such as pots, pans, blankets, pillows, a stationary set, cutlery, and many other items. See what he or she already has and build from there. Make him or her a green cleaning kit with your favorite supplies (store-bought or homemade) and include the “recipes” if they are ones you’ve made yourself.
A Letter: A heartfelt, sincerely written letter may end up being one of the most prized gifts your graduate will receive. Include encouragement, favorite memories, quotes, anything you like; also feel free to insert a favorite childhood photo of the graduate, which he or she will be sure to appreciate.
