Great post, and there's definitely truth to the idea that many colleges don't provide the service to equal the cost of their tuition, fees, books, etc. However, I also think that some of the elitism and self-righteousness is also an aspect of your age cohort. Having just left that particular period in my life, I feel that people in their early 20's tend to approach the world in just that way. You won't find most non-traditional students exhibiting that kind of intellectual swagger, mostly because the world's already beat it out of them. However, kids that don't go to college still find something on which to climb up a pedestal. The reality is that most of higher education is an absurd period of low-consequence, peer-driven, aimless self-discovery. To use an appropriately snobby college philosophy example: It's kids marching out of Plato's cave in blinders.

I graduated from college over a decade ago as an English major and feel the same way. I think that many liberal arts majors also get left out of the big job fairs and their majors don't typically require a large number of practical classes. I don't know if universities require job-searching classes or not, but I think they should.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have majored in a more practical subject and minored or double-majored in English Literature.
